Important: The most common mistake in selling antiques is assuming that appearance indicates value. A tarnished silver item that looks worthless can be a Georgian piece worth hundreds. A shiny, impressive-looking item can be modern reproduction worth nothing. Specialist assessment is the only reliable method.

What our antique valuation includes

What we do not assess

We specialise in watches, jewellery, gold, silver, coins, medals, and selected collectibles. We do not value furniture, paintings, large ceramics, books (other than exceptional antiquarian items), textiles, or general household contents. If you have items outside our expertise, we will say so and, where possible, recommend an appropriate specialist.

This honest scoping is part of the service — a valuer who claims expertise in everything is expert in nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my antiques are valuable?

Value in antiques depends on age, maker, condition, rarity, and current market demand. Not everything old is valuable, and some surprisingly modern items have strong collector markets. The most reliable way to find out is a specialist assessment. Photograph everything and submit for a preliminary review — we will advise which items justify physical assessment.

What antiques do you value and buy?

We specialise in watches (wrist and pocket), jewellery (all periods and materials), gold and silver (hallmarked and unhallmarked), coins (British and world), military medals, stamps, vintage cameras, and selected collectibles. We do not value furniture, large ceramics, paintings, or general household antiques — these require different specialist expertise.

Is there a minimum value for a free valuation?

No. We assess everything submitted and are transparent about what has value and what does not. There is no minimum. If submitted items have minimal value, we will tell you honestly and return them at no cost. We would rather be straightforward than waste your time.

How does an antique valuation differ from an insurance valuation?

An antique valuation for selling purposes reflects open market value — what a willing buyer would pay. An insurance valuation reflects replacement cost, which is typically 2–3 times higher. If you need an insurance valuation, we can advise, but our standard valuations are for selling or probate purposes and reflect current market conditions.

Should I clean or restore antiques before valuation?

No. Do not clean, polish, or restore anything before specialist assessment. Original patina, surface condition, and even accumulated dirt can be important indicators of age and authenticity. Cleaning silver can remove valuable patina. Polishing a watch case removes original finishing. Present everything exactly as found.
